What can I do to help manage my diabetes?
- Lifestyle changes: Learning about diabetes is a good first step in helping you to manage YOUR diabetes. Knowing your blood sugar levels and the targets for blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol can help you to achieve control and live a healthy life. Learning about food choices, medications, what is happening in your body etc helps empower you to make good choices and maintain this in your day-to-day life.
- Dietary changes: Meeting with a registered dietitian (RD) to help answer any dietary questions you may have. There are many nutritional myths around diabetes, and meeting with an RD can help clear these up.
- Exercise/activity level: Increasing your activity level can not only help you feel good, but can also help control your blood sugars. Meeting with our kinesologist (aka exercise specialist) can help make sure you are exercising safely and keep you motivated.
- Get support: The nurses at our clinic are here to help educate and support you. Meeting with the RN to review your blood sugars and your management plan can help keep you on track with your diabetes management.
Evidence has shown that teaching Canadians how to be partners in their own health helps them stay healthier. Diabetes Care Guelph is a program that encourages self-management for diabetics- this produces improvements in blood sugar and blood pressure, which in turn lowers the risk of complications associated with diabetes.
